Empty Properties can be exempt from Paying Business Rates

If you own a vacant property, you will not have to pay business rates for 3 months. After this 3 month period, most businesses will be required to pay full business rates though. There are a number of ways in which an empty business property can extend the business rates relief period though, for example:

  • industrial premises (e.g. warehouses) are exempt for a further 3 months
  • listed buildings
  • buildings with a rateable value under £2,900
  • When a property is owned by a charity and the use of the property is mostly for charitable purposes
  • community amateur sports clubs buildings
